Travel Resources, Travel Gear, Travel Tools, Travel Apps

Travel is a major part of the game for me. You’ve seen my about me (hopefully), and probably understand that in order to experience, see, and share our awesome planet, a lot goes into it. On top of that, SO much more goes into what you don’t see! I wish I could say everything has been easy, but producing the content to share, educate, and entertain takes a lot of time, and a lot of effort.

Without a solid base of tools and resources, none of this would even be possible. I’d be ill-equipped. I’d be stranded. I would’ve turned back. I’d be encapsulated by loneliness. I’d…. you get the point.

And I totally get it. Not all of us want to drop everything to travel the world. Not all of us have the time or the resources to do so. Heck, I don’t really have the means to do so either. But the things on this page are a few of the resources that helped me put some of these experiences under my belt. Without some of these things, a handful of my favorite moments in life would still just be a dream.. My content wouldn’t even exist.

It’s all about growth and adaptation. No matter what path of life. So, don’t be surprised if some of these travel resources change.

Matter of fact.. I’d argue that we can all use a little change.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases. I’m also a member of other affiliate programs. Affiliate links may be used throughout the content on this page. These are products that I use and recommend. Using these links will cost you nothing extra, but will send a small commission my way for purchases made. How else could I afford my coffee-fueled posting? Thanks for your support.
No. Seriously. Your support means everything.

MEDIA

How could I have a travel resources page without talking about media?

I’ve done a ton of solo travel. That means a lot of free time (or, me time, if you will). And during my free time, my travel time, and just about all the in-between, media has played a huge role in my life. Music, books, podcasts, movies, shows… you get the gist.

So I have taken the time to compile a brief list of my media resources, so you too, can take advantage of some of the awesome things that technology has granted us.

Books

I’d like to start this off with some books that have been an absolute game-changer for me. Surprisingly (okay, probably not so surprising), I don’t read often. But that doesn’t mean I don’t read. If I could read more than a page an hour, I’d probably be WAY more into it. But whatever.

Regardless, I don’t think I have to go into too much detail about how books are a fantastic travel resource. Er.. Just a resource in general. Books are simply just.. Powerful.

These are a few of the books (you can see more by browsing through the links) that have given me company, inspiration, jealousy, and knowledge. Among a broad list of other feelings as well.

Keep in mind, the books I have shown below will probably change. Ya know, as I slowly get chipping away at others.

I cannot express how cool this opportunity is. Yes, I am an affiliate partner, but this is one freaking cool program. Bookshop is a program that helps out those local & indie bookshops! Supporting small businesses benefits cultures and communities in many different ways. Is there anything wrong with big businesses? No, not particularly. But when given the opportunity to support local, I’ll choose it every time.
With Bookshop, you no longer have to be local to support local. The way it works is: a book is ordered off the website. The website uses it’s own platform to find a local/indie shop that has the book readily available, and that is where your purchase is made. Think “middle man”. Yes, e-books and audiobooks are included.

No, you do not have to grab a book I mentioned above. You can simply use the search bar above, or click on one of the links provided (below) and search for whatever you are interested in reading! Seriously. Just by going through my links, all of the benefits are still put into place!

By using my affiliate links, it gets even better. As you can see above, using my links gets a small discount on your purchase. BUT on top of that, a percentage of your purchase goes directly to the local/indie business (indie book stores are a dying breed) from which your purchase came, AND a small percentage is given to me for using my links (which helps to keep this whole shebang going).

This is all at NO EXTRA COST TO YOU!
As a matter of fact, it is costing you less! (discounts for going through my links)

Want even EASIER access to this awesome company? Visit this link and just save it to your bookmarks.
By using the link I provided, ALL of the benefits I listed above still work! that’s like a win-win-win-win scenario.. No, you don’t specifically have to buy my recommended books. Just by using my link, and searching for whatever you want from that point on.. well.. you get the point.

Podcasts

These have been saviors for me when traveling. Now of course, I love my music, but it’s also nice to listen to something else every once in a while. Audiobooks (see above) have their times, but to feel like I am actually a part of what I am listening to, a podcast hits the spot. Seriously, it’s almost embarrassing how much I catch myself laughing out loud, or thinking I’m actually hanging out, and friends with the hosts. I probably talk about podcasts too much in normal conversation.. Oh well.

Plus, you don’t realize how fast time flies when you are traveling and fully submerged into a podcast. Next thing you know, an hour, or three hours, has passed by in the blink of an eye; and BOOM! you made it to your next adventure destination.

How to Save a Planet Podcast: Where do I start? This podcast started in 2020. Which is pretty much when attention was directly given to the CLIMATE CRISIS that is happening throughout the world. The two hosts do a wonderful job of staying un-biased (other than the fact they both understand change needs to happen), and get into the depths of climate related discussions.
Whether you believe it’s a real thing (?). Or know it is a real thing. This podcast is awesome. It’s not all “doom and gloom” that people associate with climate change. How to Save a Planet Podcast does a great job at taking all the technical things associated with all things climate, and breaking them down into lay-peoples’ terms.

I, for one, definitely need it explained like I’m 9 years old.

One of the best parts? Through each episode, the hosts talk about different ways in which you can get involved. Simple ways (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle) all the way to complicated (start a booming movement like Swedish Activist, Greta Thunberg).

You’ve read some of my content (hopefully). You know my views about this. I do my best to show how awesome the world around us is. I push for personal change. Simple steps go a long way.

Joe Rogan Experience: If you know Joe Rogan at all, he basically got his fame as host of Fear Factor. His podcast is probably one of the most streamed podcasts… ever. And, although there are many things I don’t necessarily agree with in some episodes, there are a number of them which I truly enjoyed (like the interview with Kelly Slater. episode: #1185).
I have to give it to Joe though. He not only speaks his mind, but he asks the questions we’d all like to ask. The dude really is intelligent.

Outside Podcast: This podcast encapsulates a whole realm of passions. Across the board, the Outside Podcast does a fantastic job at interviewing, and breaking down topics that have to do with all things outdoors. From interviewing professionals, experts, and even enthusiasts, they have done an incredible job expanding knowledge with each episode.
There is a vast selection of topics to pick from (like What Happens To A Cyclist’s Body When It’s Hit By a Car? to What We Really Know About Life In Outer Space). If you just want to get your toes wet.. start with Florence Williams On The Nature Fix.

Of course there are other podcasts I listen to, but these are probably the most listened-to by me.
If you really want more recommendations, give me shout from my Contact Page.
I’d love to share some favorites, and maybe find some new shows for myself!

GEAR

Here to highlight some must-have travel gear that I bring along on most of my adventures. A lot of this gear has proven to be essential time and time again, as I continue to travel. Remember, no two experiences are going to be the same, so take what you will from my recommendations. But what I can guarantee is these are products I personally use regularly; Products I can honestly recommend after having used them myself.

The GSI Water Cube has been one of the greatest purchases I have ever made for my road tripping and car-camping life.
Having easy access to water is without a doubt, one of the most important thing for travel-ease and comfort.
Best part about it? Unlike the giant plastic jugs you can buy, this cube collapses down when empty, which is a HUGE space saver.

We all have to eat! If you know me, you know I’m all about eating (no shame). And you know what says comfort after a long day of travel or hiking? A nice warm meal.
My Coleman Stove has been nothing but awesome. Super easy to maintain, use, and repair.
Besides.. How else would I have a hot cup of coffee in the mornings when a fire can’t be had?

A light.. really?
Heck yeah a light! Don’t underestimate the necessity of having a light at almost all times. And better yet, a headlamp to keep it hands-free!
Why this Black Diamond Light?
Because Black Diamond is about quality AND functionality. Waterproof, rugged, and has a red light for not blinding your neighbors.
Mine has lasted through the ringer.

A pocket knife is an adventurer’s best friend. I don’t think I need to waste your time listing out the various times that having a knife on me has proven beneficial.
One more thing.. I am fully aware that every individual is going to have their preference on knife brands and shapes/sizes. I totally get it. I do too.
But I can say, although some Gerber items have a bad rap, Gerber knives have held up through some extreme (probably not-so-necessary) use in my experience.

Nalgene water bottles..
How much more do I really need to say? I own a bunch of them, use them ALL the time, and couldn’t recommend them more.
Not to mention that they have a life-time warranty!

Yah, I mentioned two water sources. Hydrate or Die…drate.

** A Whole Lot More Coming Soon! **

I know, I know. I am excited too! Just be sure to check back!

TRAVEL TOOLS

Let’s be real, travel resources are constantly changing. Depending on the experience, the travel type, the area…
Believe me, I know that no single “tool” is good for all purposes. But, I do have some recommendations that I can make to hopefully squeeze a little ease into your travels and experiences.

Apps

AirBnb

We are all we aware of AirBnb and what it does. But honestly, it makes things easy. Find a stay in your budget. Find a stay specifically near a destination. Even use it for finding a place that has some good internet connection, and offers a chance to relax.
Hotels have their place, but wow, there are some awesomely unique AirBnb stays out there.

What else could you ask for?

HipCamp

So you may be well aware that I am a HUGE fan of road trips. And, if you know that, you know I love me some time in nature.
Heck, I’ll be the first to tell you I have spent more overnight stays in nature than I have in any hotel or AirBnb (combined!)
HipCamp is like an AirBnb but catered to the outdoors lifestyle. What is it? You use it just like AirBnb, and can rent pieces of land for your stay! Be it tent, car, RV, camper, A-frame cabin, treehouse, whatever. It’s simple to use, and remains an excellent tool to keep on the belt.
Seriously… check it out.

AllTrails

Imagine wanting to get to some epic panoramic view of a dream destination. Only to get 1/4 of the way into the hike and finding out it’s too difficult for you. Or perhaps the hike is closed due to repair or natural disaster.
That’s what AllTrails is for. Not only can you check trail resources (what the conditions are, what gear you may need, or the difficulty, and popularity), but you can even create an account and keep track of where you have been and log your miles!

GasBuddy

I am sure we have all at least heard of this app before. It’s again, real simple to use. The app uses your location and shows you the surrounding gas stations, and their prices.
Do I always abide by saving a penny or two when fueling up? Heck no.
But what I do like is being able to find gas stations (that are open) when in the middle of nowhere, or when traveling on one of the long highways I frequently seem to come across.
But I can also tell you, it has saved me a fair amount of money (mainly when I find those 50+ cent deals).

Additional Tools

This may come as a no-brainer to some of you. But if you have ever done any travel research on your own, you have without question, come across the Lonely Planet book series.
From guides to nature, to guides to individual states, to even having books strictly dedicated to you us foodies out there. I couldn’t imagine any sort of traveler (big time or not), not at least flipping through a page or two of one of their books.
I truthfully believe that Lonely Planet, as a whole, very well could be the greatest travel resource of all time.
